Star Trek: Into Darkness

This is a nice introduction to Khan.  But as all you Trekies know J.J. Abrams prequels are redefining the stories we adults grew up with.  This change in the universe is a nice twist due to the ability to basically do what they want with the story line as the new time continuum (explained in Star Trek) .  As you remember in the Wraith of Khan we find Kirks old enemy on the deserted planet ready for revenge.  Well this is the story of them first meeting and how Khan's history plays into the Star Trek Universe.  They pay homage to the old movies with a nice role reversal of Kirk and Spock in the warp core.  This is a great addition to the revamp of the series and shows the future of many more to come or a TV show as the Enterprise embarks on it's 5 year voyage to Seek out and Explore the Universe.  Own it.

World War Z

Nothing like the book.  Nice non-stop action throughout the film.  Not a Walking dead, rather a good global look at a virus mutation turning everyone into zombies.  Interesting adaptation that goes in the wrong direction of the book, but done well.  Watchable but not going to win any awards.  Rental.

Oblivion

So Tom Cruise lives in the sky, fixing the drones safeguarding the fusion generators water collection systems.  This is the power source for the space station and the survivors living on Titan a moon surrounding Jupiter.  Or is it?  Something is happening and the alien invasion we are lead to believe that destroyed the planet isn't exactly how it's suppose to go.  Beautifully shot, showing the beauty of the world once man no longer inhabits the planet.  A good Science Fiction story with just enough mystery to keep you drawn in.  Wish Morgan Freeman had a larger role.  Worth seeing, but once again not worth owning.  I recommend you see it in Blue Ray if you can, it is that pretty.

The Place Beyond the Pines

Confusing, sad and not sure what the message is.  The movie revolves around two families.  Ryan Goslings gets top billing but he's dead before half-way through the movie.  The acting holds this movie together, otherwise it would be a complete disaster.  For such a powerful story the filmography could of gone to making this a so-so movie to something everyone would have to see.  The story is powerful but is found lacking with no clear message.

Now You See Me

Everyone loves magic.  We love it because we want to believe their is something more than the daily grind.  The movie is awesome only several levels.  The first is it's a bank robbery movie, 2nd it's a magic movie, 3rd it's a revenge movie.  There might be a few other things in their I've missed but if you want to be entertained for about 2 hours this is the movie to see.  Awesome! Defiantly check it out.

Pain & Gain

Michael Bay's new film is not the best film I've ever seen, but it definitely has it's moments.  The best part of this film is the fact that it's true.  How the dumb with delusions of greatest can achieve greatness through taking it from someone else.  I can't tell if this is a commentary on America or just this specific grouping of Pectoral Elite Members.  Dwayne Johnson's performance of a crack addict who has a torrent relationship with  Jesus with the God given ability to knock people out is great.  What's interesting to note about this film is that these body builders gave Miami Dade County Police Department the biggest problem in the departments history.  Which might be another commentary on Miami's Police department.  I'm truly mixed about knowing if this film is worth seeing.  For once make up your own mind, it's a buck and a quarter at the Redbox.  But I know it's not worth the purchase.
